The Footballer is an excellent early season imitator of the black chironomid, a pattern devised by Geoffrey Bucknall. Good results are usually achieved fishing the Footballer close to the surface, casting it just in front of the cruising fish. It is important that the leader is greased to witin six inches of the nymph when using this style.
